American Pie

During a hot summer day, whilst I was working at a certain energy organisation on the North Sea Gas conversion project, I was rather distracted listening to Dial-a-Disc on the telephone (remember that?). Don McLean was singing American Pie, although wikipedia says that was released October 1971. Either Dial-a-Disc was very late, or it had just come into the charts in the UK in summer 1972?
